Books

This month I’ve been reading Thrive: The Single Life as God Intended by Lina Abujamra.

I started this book with my small group, and every thursday we’ve had top-tier conversations about singleness as God intends and how we individually relate to it. Having been single for more than forty years, the author offers wisdom on the mindset and heart posture unmarried Christians should cultivate. The titles of my favorite chapters include: Free as a Bird: Understanding True Freedom, Single-Minded Focus: Pursuing Undivided Devotion, and Me, Myself, and I: Defeating Self-Pity.

Another book I’ve fallen in love with reading is Heaven by Randy Alcorn.

I was inspired to purchase this book by the video With The Perry’s YouTube video linked below. Their discussion on heaven left me with a renewed awe at the idea of what heaven could be like. I’m only a few chapters into this book, and I am obsessed. This may be the most formative thing I've consumed all month. Here’s just a snippet from the book:

Mariah provided a great read this month. I’m hardly on social media these days, but apparently there was a disagreement in the Christian community on the topic of fun. Her take was so on par with what I think fun is and how we’re meant to have it, as followers of Jesus. I’m of the opinion that we, as Christians, can and should—outside of our trials, tribulation, and persecution— be having the most fun. When you get a chance, take a peek at her post.

Alright, stop the presses. This video was so good that I watched it multiple times, and couldn’t stop talking about it. This is the video that inspired the purchase of Randy Alcorn’s book Heaven, and I also really appreciated the lens and perspectives they gave on the topics of legalism and sexual immorality. I feel like each of the topics covered are less popular topics in Christian spaces. Even heaven. As people who very much want to be there, most of us don’t go into depth and lengthy talk about it nearly enough. They touched on other topics as well, like insecurity, and how their marriage has helped them in their individual walks with Christ and truly, the whole video was edifying.

Tim Keller is so cool. The way he breaks the truth down with realness, and humor and sound doctrine is masterful. I can’t remember which exact chapter of Thrive, linked above, inspired the watching of this video, but I’m glad I did. In this video he breaks down the uniqueness of singleness in the Christian faith as it relates to how to world relates to singleness; especially the ancient world in which the Bible was written. Rather than simply encouraging Christians to "be happy you're single," Keller places singleness within the broader story of Scripture. He explores how marriage and singleness functioned in the ancient world, adding historical context that will broaden your perspective on the topic.

I’ve been obsessed with glamping videos lately. I’m thiiiis close to going off the deep end and buying a 3-room tent villa. Have I been camping in years? No. Do I have a big group of people to in mind to go with? Also no. Am I leading myself into foolishness? Possibly. Thankfully, it’s too hot for me to go camping anywhere, so I have some time before I make any decisions. In the meantime, I will continue binging camping videos and adding item after item to my amazon wishlists. More to come on this.

I recently moved into a new position at work, and I purchased this Bible verse jar to place on my desk. Something to draw me back to Jesus in the midst of a slow or hectic work day is exactly what I need! Honestly, what we all need. I also really like this on my desk for any and everyone to see because if people want to, they can pull one out and read a Bible verse for how they’re feeling as well. The quality is also high and it came with several different labels in case this was a gift for someone else. WIN.

GATHERING

This month, I spent time with my family at a Juneteenth gathering. You can read about what I wore and my thoughts behind Juneteenth in my previous post linked here. There is something really good about gathering with family, catching up, celebrating, and sharing a meal. They might be crazy, things might get rocky—you never know. But we won’t get another earthly family while we’re here so we might as well enjoy the rollercoaster, right?

I also participated in a 5-week study of Ephesians with the Young Professionals group at my church. I love church, but there’s something special about getting together with other believers for Bible study. Put me in the Word, have me soak it in, give me opportunity to talk to my sisters and brothers about it, and I am more than content. I enjoyed every moment of the study and fellowship. I already can’t wait until the next.

These are the things I've allowed into my Living Room this month. They've shaped my thinking, strengthened my faith, and have nudged me a little closer toward Christ. I like the direction they're taking me.

My family has a tradition of getting together every year to celebrate Juneteenth. It’s become one of those days that reminds me how much I love simply coming together and connecting over good food, good conversations, and the opportunity to celebrate a significant part of our history.

My identity is in Christ first. But as we can all see, I’m also a Black woman. And I love that God created each of us in His image, giving every ethnicity inherent dignity and value. So while my identity in Christ is the foundation of who I am, I can also appreciate the history and heritage that have shaped my earthly story.

I believe the gospel unites people from every nation, tribe, and tongue, and it also gives us the freedom to celebrate the unique stories and cultures God has woven into humanity. Juneteenth is a meaningful celebration of Black history and freedom, and over the years I’ve appreciated seeing it become more widely acknowledged and celebrated.

With all of that in mind, I was looking forward to putting on something that reflects how I feel. I wanted an outfit that spoke to the occasion while being comfortable enough for an afternoon at the park with family, and polished enough to feel intentional.

OUTFIT DETAILS

Skirt

If you’re building a wardrobe of versatile basics like I am, a black denim midi skirt deserves a spot. Unlike traditional blue denim, it feels a little less basic while still being just as easy to style.

I especially love the little details. The silver buttons break up the black denim just enough to add interest without competing with the rest of the outfit. The high-waisted fit creates a flattering silhouette, especially with my signature style of a tucked-in tee, and the midi length offers plenty of coverage while the adjustable slit allows you more versatility and the option to catch more of a breeze.

Shoes

If you’ve seen previous posts here at Faith on the Page: Style Notes then you’ve seen these sandals in another color. I am officially a REEF girly, they can have all of my money. They are not sponsoring me, but with the way I rave about them, you would think so. They’re just so extremely comfortable, they give a little extra height, and make an outfit feel more intentional than a standard flat sandal. As an open-toed, long-walk lover, you’ll see me in these a lot.

Bag

My actual bag is the Brandon Blackwood shearling bucket bag, but since it's been discontinued, I wanted to link something that gives a similar feel rather than leave you empty-handed. This Amazon version has the same bucket shape and a timeless black finish—even though it's missing the fuzzy texture I love. But how cute is the handle accessory? I’d wear this piece and honestly be just as satisfied, for a fraction of my originals price.

Graphic Tee

Finally, the centerpiece of the outfit: the graphic tee.

I knew I wanted to wear something that acknowledged the occasion, but I also loved that its message pointed beyond ethnicity and toward an identity that lasts forever.

“God Says I Am...” is a reminder that while I celebrate my heritage with gratitude, my truest identity is found in Christ. The two aren’t in competition.

I’ve noticed, at least within the Black community, that some people feel like they have to choose between embracing their identity in Christ and embracing their history and ancestry, but I don’t believe Scripture asks us to do that. God didn’t make a mistake when He created us with different cultures, histories, and ethnicities. Those things are part of our earthly story, and they’re worth appreciating.

As a Black woman, my ethnicity isn’t something I set aside when I became a Christian. It is ever-before me, it’s how God created me, and it’s part of my family’s story. It’s lost no importance, yet I also hold the truth that Christ defines me more deeply than it ever could.

Ironically, I think that’s one of the most freeing things about the gospel. When Christ becomes our primary identity, it doesn’t diminish our appreciation for where we’ve come from. It actually enlarges our capacity to love people whose stories are different from our own, because we recognize that every one of us bears God’s image and every believer belongs to the same family.

That’s why I loved wearing this shirt on Juneteenth. It beautifully held both truths together: gratitude for my heritage and an even greater gratitude for the Savior who defines my identity.

As a certified girls’ girl, I was immediately sold on the premise. Any event dedicated to fostering genuine sisterhood already has my attention, but when Christ is at the center and the dress code gives me a reason to get dolled up, I’ll practically materialize out of thin air.

So let me tell you about the event, and show you what I decided to put together.

Outfit Details

Dress

For the event, I chose this vibrant red satin abaya that draped over me from my collarbone down to my ankles. It tied in the back to give a little shape and felt like butter against my skin. I was covered head to toe, but, truly, I’ve never felt more elegant and regal.

The dress code for the event said cocktail attire or gowns and I did not want to waste this opportunity to wear this dress I’d been waiting months to wear. Gabrielle explained that she wanted us to dress up and wear beautiful attire, not only because we are queens, but because we are a royal priesthood and she wanted us to dress the part. Yes and amen to that!

Accessories

One thing I appreciated about the event was the intentionality behind every detail. From the decor to the conversations, everything pointed back to purpose, beauty, and encouragement.

Since the dress was already making a statement, I wanted the accessories to complement it rather than compete with it.

Depending on the outfit, the recipe is typically:

simple outfit + eye catching accessories = ✅

loud outfit + dainty accessories = ✅

I wanted this dress to do ALL of the talking. So I chose:

minimalist outfit + simple accessories = ✅✅ ✅

Outside of the 1 ring that stays on my hand, I only had one piece of jewelry on. And it was all I needed.

Tiara

One of the most beautiful things about this event is how Gabrielle provided tiaras for each one of us ladies, and we were crowned and inducted into the Queendom. It was such a beautiful touch. I mean, the evening was already memorable, but that made the night that much more special.

Handbag

There was worship, laughter, encouragement, and meaningful conversation throughout the evening. It was one of those gatherings where women genuinely wanted to see one another flourish.

The room itself was full of color, beauty, and thoughtful details, and I’m glad I brought a bag with a little personality to match. I needed some contrast to make the look pop, so I went with my Brandon Blackwood Kendrick Trunk in puffer blue.

The color, the softness, and the style of this bag is perfect. However, friend, this isn't exactly an affordable recommendation. It was around $300 when I bought it years ago. Most of my wardrobe is much more budget friendly, but every now and then I come across a piece I love enough to save for and keep for years. This bag has been one of those pieces.

Shoes

The event featured a panel of five Christian women who spoke on friendship, healing sisterhood wounds, purpose, and calling one another higher. One of my favorite parts of the evening was listening to women share honestly about their experiences and the ways God had met them through community. They also offered practical wisdom on building healthy friendships, pursuing genuine sisterhood, and allowing ourselves to be known and supported by others.

As for the shoes, you could only catch glimpses of them when I walked, but I loved the color and pattern they added to the outfit. They picked up the blues, reds, and warm tones from the rest of the look without competing with the dress.

I've had these for years and haven't come across anything quite like them since, which makes me appreciate them even more.

Building the Queendom was such a beautiful reminder that Christian sisterhood is a gift. We need women who encourage us, challenge us, pray for us, and remind us of who God says we are.

The outfit was fun.

The conversations were better.

And leaving as a crowned member of the Queendom alongside so many lovely ladies made the evening all the more memorable.

These are the kinds of gatherings that get my full attention. The kind that remind me that we need our sisters in Christ by our sides as we pursue Him. God often uses friendship, community, and faithful women to encourage us as we walk out our callings.

Needless to say, when Gabrielle hosts another one, I’ll be there. And yes, I can’t wait to find an outfit for it.

Just like we don’t stumble into a relationship with Christ, we also don’t stumble into becoming the people He destined us to be. We’ve got to be i n t e n t i o n a l.

So that’s what we’re doing here! Even though I have years of journals I can look back on, one thing I haven’t done is intentionally and specifically document what’s actively shaping and influencing me, so this is going to be fun!

Books

This month I finished Misreading Scripture with Individualist Eyes by Randolph Richards and Richard James, and this book opened my eyes to the ways that my Southern California born-and-raised, individualistic mind is oriented in relation to other people; specifically my family of believers and God. This book gave me a better grasp on collectivist culture dynamics. Collectivists think and live their lives with a set of interdependent cultural norms that prioritize group harmony.

If you’re American, then you’ve been born into the most individualist country there is, so like me, your nature might be to shy away from anything that resembles co-dependency with humans, but this book taught me the beauty of interdependence and how it relates to our relationship with not just other people, but with the Lord. The breakdown of what patronage, honor, and shame is, how it works in the Middle East and Asian regions and what it looks like in our relationships has me looking at things from a new perspective that I really like.

Whether we feel God is using a megaphone or whispering in this season, this is a topic every Christian struggles with at various points in life. We all want to hear God’s voice, and we want to hear it now and in the way we want to hear it. But this video was so freeing, y’all.

I just love hearing Priscilla Shirer speak. She pours out buckets of wisdom in this conversation with her son JC. I felt a weight I didn’t even realize I had, lift from my shoulders after this one.

Not only did a weight lift, but this conversation inspired me to continue praying into Proverbs 15:22. It’s one of my core Bible verses for the year with community and mentorship being a focal point, and if you watch you’ll understand why this video made it here.

Around mid-May, I wanted to watch a sermon and I needed a specific kind of encouragement. So I went to YouTube and said, “Okay Lord, what do you have for me today?” and this was the first video that popped up.

Yes, I know, the algorithm is a thing but first let me say that God is sovereign over these algorithms—second, I’m telling you, it had been a very long time since I watched a sermon. This word chewed me up and spat me out, in the best way possible. It was exactly what I needed.

One of the lines that stuck with me:

Series

Let me tell you something, I LOVE A GOOD K-DRAMA! I briefly lived in South Korea, and I never expected to leave with an appreciation for K-dramas, but here we are and I don’t regret it one bit.

This month I landed on the series Perfect Crown, on Hulu, and when I tell you I was hooked—I was hooked. I consumed this show in a borderline obsessive fashion. That’s how good it was.

I find K-dramas so refreshing in comparison to typical American dramas. I’m not saying they’re morally perfect, but they feel calmer and more wholesome than the graphic and hyper-sexualized media that’s regularly promoted.

This rom-com has the spicy tension we love to see, made me laugh out loud, and had me blushing, oohing and ahhing. Exposure shapes our inner world, so if I’m going to watch a drama, I’d rather it be something like this. Highly recommend.

Creating

I have a vision of what I want my home to look and feel like.

What I want is a mini-sanctuary. I want pockets all over my home that inspire prayer and remind me of God’s grace and love at any given moment. I want even the walls to minister to me.

So I’m creating these pockets in my home that feel peaceful, and slow me down.

Gathering

This month I attended my friend’s beautiful event, Building the Queendom. This event was centered around connecting with other women who love Jesus and empowering one another as women, friends, leaders, and sisters in Christ. There was a panel that addressed sisterhood wounds and emphasized community. Everyone dressed up in beautiful dresses and gowns, and at the end of the night, we were crowned and inducted into the Queendom. This is the kind of discipleship I like.

These are things I’ve allowed to disciple me this month, and I like the direction all of these things are taking me. Thanks for taking the time to read this edition. 🤍

A feminine, comfortable, and easy outfit feels like a small gift. We are not trying to overthink or overheat this summer when it comes to our ensembles, okay!? We just need an outfit we can still feel feminine, comfortable, and put together in.

This look was exactly that for me.

My wardrobe is very comfortable-but-feminine coded these days. I want pieces that are pretty, simple, and breathable enough for a warm day, and also still cute enough to wear out, take pictures in, or spend the day walking around.

Outfit Details

Okay, so as we can see, the skirt really is the star of the show. It really elevated the whole look and feel of the outfit, because had I thrown on jeans with this oversized faith-over-fear tee, it wouldn’t have hit quite like this. Here’s what I like about this skirt: it’s quality. It’s not see through, and it’s not so lightweight that it’s thin. But it is light enough to be breathable and give you that movie-like swish and flutter in a breeze.

Let me tell you something though, I’ll never get over these sandals. I bought these for my trip to Rome last year, and they’ve been my number one pair of sandals ever since. I can walk in these shoes all day and all night and my feet won’t ache—not even a little bit! Initially, when I came across them I sucked my teeth at the $80 price tag but I promise you, REEF knows what they’re doing with these. Between me and you, I’ve already bought another second pair and I have restrained myself from purchasing another. I always appreciate pieces that are easy to rewear, and these are definitely the kind of sandals that can go with several summer outfits.

Last and most importantly, the tee. The tee! I am a walking billboard, no matter what I put on—and so are you. Look how simple it is to share a meaningful message. We can inspire someone and not even know it. I’m sure we all have at some point. Someone could see this shirt and be reminded that that thing that they’re worried and fearful about, is no match for our God. You think it’s just a tee-shirt, and it is, but it’s also another way to proclaim our faith and shine a light in this dark world. The skirt may have been the star, but the shirt is the sun.

What I loved most about this look is that it felt like me. Faith inspired, simple, and still stylish. And as simple as it was, people noticed this outfit. Love a modest head-turning fit! It’s a good reminder that style does not have to be over the top, give too much, be complicated or extremely expensive to be beautiful. So I’m calling this my soft summer uniform and you will see plenty more variations of it in the future.

But for now, I wanted to start with something simple.

What I wore to the Vatican.

If you’re planning to visit the Vatican, or any of the beautiful, historic churches in Rome, just know that what you wear actually matters.

Not just because of dress codes, but because of the space you’re stepping into.

So here’s the thing, I never really know what I’m going to wear. I usually dress based on how I want to feel.

And since I was stepping into a sacred space, I wanted to feel
comfortable… but still elegant
practical… but still intentional

The Vatican, along with most historic churches, does have a dress code.

👉🏾 Shoulders need to be covered
👉🏾Skirts or shorts should fall below the knee
👉🏾 No low-cut or revealing clothing

It’s not overly strict, but it is something to be mindful of out of respect.

So I wanted an outfit that honored that… but was still me.

So here’s what I wore:

I LOVE a good graphic tee. I just do. And if it speaks about Jesus… even better.

I don’t know when you plan to visit, but I went in the dead of summer. And with shoulders needing to be covered, the last thing I wanted was to feel restricted in a shawl or jacket. I also wasn’t trying to deal with noticeable sweat in a tighter tee.

So a loose t-shirt was the move.

I found this one with the intention of bringing it on this trip, and it did not disappoint. It gave me the comfort I wanted, with “Jesus saves” front and center, and the Gospel on the back.

I thought about wearing pants, but I remembered this skirt I bought when I was trying to bring more modest and timeless pieces into my wardrobe.

And I’m so glad I did.

This skirt has a bit of weight to it, and it moves so beautifully when I walk. It instantly added that touch of elegance the outfit needed, without sacrificing comfort.

For shoes, I knew I’d be doing a lot of walking, so comfort was non-negotiable.

I wanted something I could wear all day without thinking about it, but that still felt clean and put together.

These were perfect. Simple, lightweight, and easy to walk in… which, if you’ve ever been to Rome, you know is essential.

As for my bag, this one is extra special to me.

What to Wear in Sacred Spaces (Especially in the Summer)

If you’re visiting churches, whether in Europe, the U.S., Africa, or anywhere else, it’s always good to be mindful of how you show up.

Different places may have different levels of formality, but the heart behind it stays the same.

A few simple things to keep in mind:

• Keep your shoulders covered

• Opt for skirts, dresses, or bottoms that fall below the knee

• Choose light, breathable fabrics for the heat

• Wear comfortable shoes, especially if you’ll be walking or standing

• Simplicity is key

If you’ve followed my main Faith on the Page publication for a while, then you already know my heart is rooted in faith, reflection, and living intentionally with God at the center. Here’s what’s been apparent in my walk; following Jesus doesn’t just shape our quiet time or our theology. It shapes the way we move through every part of life.

Even our style!

The things we wear. The spaces we create. The products we keep around us. The little details that make life feel warm, peaceful, feminine, and lived in.

So, I wanted a space for that too.

Style Notes is where I’ll be sharing affordable, faith filled fashion finds, modest outfit ideas, beauty products I genuinely enjoy, cozy home pieces, and everyday favorites that I think other women would love too.

Nothing overly curated or unattainable. Just intentional things that add a little something to our everyday lives.

I’ve always loved style and aesthetics, but as I’ve grown in my walk with God, my relationship with those things has changed too. I care more now about intentionality than performance. About stewardship over excess. About feeling beautiful and comfortable in my skin and in my clothes.

To me, honoring God and having personal style can absolutely hold hands.
